Professional Framing in Westport
There seems to be a frame store and coffee shop on every street corner in Fairfield, Westport, Darien, New Canaan, and throughout the region.
After visiting many frame shops in the region, we came to the conclusion that many are overpriced, puffed up and think very highly of what they offer. So we wondered, how can a frame that seemed simple, go home with customers willing to charged $550? The mystery deepened as we found out what it really cost to make. In the olden days when my uncle Max had a high level shop in NYC and served the Met, Guggenheim and the other biggies, frames were more of a craft. Like much today, many frames are mass produced for standard sizes, and sometimes the wood chosen is not the best.
Anyway, we took a look at the quality of the frames, the cost of the overall process, even visited some local framers, and figured out that many people severely overcharged for no reason. The original moulding comes in 50 foot or longer lengths, then is chopped, then is joined. This is not rocket science or brain surgery. And since pricing has come down, we wondered, "why haven't prices?"
